Lecture 7 English Poetry of the Romantic Period English Romanticism is generally said to have begun in 1798 with the publication of Wordsworth and Coleridge’s Lyrical Ballads (《抒情歌谣集》) and to have ended in 1832 with Sir Walter Scotts death and the passage of the first Reform Bill in the Parliament. English Romanticism marked the reaction in literature, philosophy, art, religion, and politics from the neoclassical reason and the formal orthodoxy of the past. The Romantic period is an age of poetry. Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley and Keats are the major poets. Romantic period is also a great age of prose. The major prose writers are William Hazlitt 威廉·赫兹里特(1778-1830),a great critic on Shakespeare, Elizabethan drama, and English poetry, Charles Lamb 查尔斯·兰姆(1775-1834) who is a lovable essayist, and Thomas De Quincey托马斯·德·昆西(1785-1859) who is one of the keenest intellects of the age. The two major novelists of the period are Jane Austen and Walter Scott. Robert Burns 罗伯特·彭斯 (1759-1796) 1. Burns was one of the most famous poets of the peasants in the world. 2. He obtain the characteristic of all old Scottish folk songs: simplicity, humor, directness and optimism. 3. As a poet of the laboring people, he pours out the sentiment of the people. 4.
