(10’) Warm-Up Questions In this play, inexplicable events – a visit of a U.F.O. followed by the occurrence of strange things – cause the residents of quiet Maple Street to erupt into rioting. Because they suspect that alien monsters, in man’s form, invade them. Hence, anyone living on this street COULD be the alien monster. If so, - Who are the real monsters? - Where are the alien monsters? - What do they want to do? Style of the Play This play is an episode of the American Television anthology series “The Twilight Zone”. It is in the style of science-fiction writing, which is a “fiction dealing principally with the impact of actual or imagined science on society or individuals or having a scientific factor as an essential orienting component.” (Merriam Webster Dictionary Online). Beyond this basic idea, two widely acknowledged sub-genres of sci-fi exist as follows: Hard SF vs. Soft SF Hard SF Hard SF focuses on “hard” science and is often written by authors with a strong scientific background. Generally works of hard SF have an emphasis on scientific detail and accuracy. Writers of hard SF include: Isaac Asimov: A prolific writer with a PhD in biochemistry, he is best known for his Foundation series and The Three Laws of Robotics. 2. Soft SF With Soft SF, the focus is more on the “softer” sciences, such as sociology, psychology, and philosophy. These stories study the effect new sciences have on people and society. Some examples of soft SF include: Frank Herbert: He is best known for his career-spanning Dune universe.
