Optimal Medical Treatment of Coronary Heart Disease Word Count: 1,179 Coronary Heart Disease Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is a type of cardiovascular disease and usually caused by atherosclerosis, also called Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). CHD is characterized by a narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, which are especially vulnerable to the occlusion because of their small diameters, by the accumulative cholesterol and fatty deposits (plaques) on the inner wall of arteries. The rupture or blockage, therefore, restricts the necessary supply of oxygen and blood to the heart. Some typical clinical symptoms of coronary atherosclerosis include chest pain, called angina pectoris; myocardial infraction, commonly referred to as heart attack.
