* H ERO What is the hero? The dictionary says, hero is a person who admired by many people for his or her brave deeds. So today, we’ll show you a hero in our hearts. Florence Nightingale was born in Italy on 12 May 1820 and was named Florence after her birthplace. Florence and her sister were educated by their father and private teachers. She excelled in her studies. When she grew up, she decided to become a nurse. This decision greatly upset her family, because at that time nurses in England were looked down upon by people. But she was determined, and began caring for the sick in hospitals. In March 1854,England was fighting a war with Russia in Turkey. At the front many British soldiers were wounded or sick. Reports of the sufferings of the wounded in the front created anger in Britain. In response, the government appointed Florence Nightingale to hire female nurses to work in the military hospitals in the front. The soldiers called Florence “The Lady with the Lamp”. During the?war, she gained the nickname The Lady with the Lamp from a phrase in a report :When all the medical officers have retired for the night and silence and darkness have settled down upon those miles of prostrate sick, she may be observed alone, with a little lamp in her hand, making her solitary rounds. Later career In 1860, she laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment of her nursing school .It was the first secular nursing school in the world, now part of King’s College London. The Nightingale Pledge taken by new nurses was named in her honor, and the annual International Nurse Day??is celebrated around the world on her birthday. On 13 August 1910, at the age of 90, she died peacefully in her sleep in her room. Death Nightingale is best know as the founder of the modern profession of nursing and as a hospital reformer. Every year the International Red Cross awards the Florence Nightingale Medal to dedicated nurses of the world.
