* Systems Modeling Transform objectives into a system that meets the objectives Guide systems throughout the lifecycle Apply systems modeling (tools and techniques) at all phases of the system development lifecycle Initial conception Design Implementation Testing and evaluation Operation and maintenance * System Lifecycle Identity a need Design system to Meet need Build system Operate and Evaluate system Dispose of system * Modeling Model: A representation of a system that can be used to answer questions about the system Types of model Physical (replica of real object in smaller scale) Qualitative (conceptual understanding of a complex problem) Quantitative (focus of this course) What makes a model a good one? Example Three friends take a long trip using a tandem bicycle for 2 persons. Because the bike riders travel at 20 km/hr, independent of the number of riders, and all three persons walk at 4 km/hr, they proceed as follows: To start the journey, friends A, B ride the bicycle and friend C walks; after a while, friend A drops off friend B who starts walking, and A rides the bicycle alone in the reverse direction. When A and C meet, they turn the bicycle around and ride forward until they catch up with B. At that moment the 3 friends have completed a basic cycle of their strategy, which they then repeat a number of times until they reach their destination. What is their average travel speed? * * Modeling Modeling issues Boundaries Macroscopic vs. Microscopic Static vs. Dynamic Stochastic vs. Deterministic Linear vs. Nonlinear Continuous vs. Discrete Disaggregate vs. Aggregate Numerical simulation vs. Closed form solution * Why are we modeling? Fundamental questions What kinds of questions do we have in mind when we model? How might those questions suggest how we choose to develop our models? Models for insight (to understand, explain, predict, and improve) Models for the best alternative (optimization) Models for system operation (real-time use) Learn from model bu
