Do they need to sit any exams? Types of Schools—Primary Secondary Generally speaking, there are two systems of primary and secondary education in Britain — the state school and public school. The former is in the majority; the latter is few in number but of great influence. 1. Primary Schools: from 5 (4 in Northern Ireland) up to the age of eleven. All children in the U.K. must receive a fulltime education from the age of five to sixteen. Education at this stage is compulsory. A. In the state primary schools, there are two sections— infant section and junior section. a. Compulsory education begins at the age of five when children attend “infants” school or “ First School”, which are co-educational. At the age of seven, they enter junior schools. b. Two thirds primary schools are wholly maintained by the local authorities. One third belong to churches, which provide general education and religious instruction. c.
