Strategies for effective interviewing (cntd) Arrange the venue based on the interviewee’s preference if you are organising the venue, arrange for comfort and communication Be punctual and use time well Keep appropriate records and notes Avoid check-list interviews (Dwyer, 2005) Preparation When asking ‘interviewee(s)’ if they would like to be interviewed for your assignment, let them know: the topic and purpose for the interview how long the interview will take (approximately) they can have more information if needed - email a copy of the ‘Information Sheet’ (Business Communication) Once agreement has been given by the interviewee for an interview, prepare a set of questions that asks for information related to your purpose Planning the interview questions The first question should set the order of the interview All other questions are based around the first question For example (Management assignment): first question: “tell us what your work involves in a regular day” Following questions will relate to interviewee’s answers Need to anticipate what the interviewee’s answers might be when planning the interview questions Open questions encourage the interviewee to speak freely and provide a range of information – eg. Who, What, When, Where, How and Why type questions Planning the interview questions Closed questions limit the response as generally require a ‘Yes or No’ response. Mirror questions restate an answer inviting further information Interviewee’s answer: ‘I thought the team I worked with on the project was great.’ Mirror question back: ‘The team was great?’ Interviewee’s answer: ‘Yes. We shared ideas and I liked the support of the team. I like working in teams.’ Planning the interview questions (cntd) Probing questions follow on from the last response of the interviewee: Interviewee’s response: ‘My present job requires me to manage my time.’ Interviewer’s probing question: ‘How do you manage your time?’ OR “Please tell me (more) about that…” “
