Winter Solstice The Date Winter Solstice is one of the most important festivals and one of the 24 solar terms in China. It is usually on December 22 or December 23 in every year(solar calendar). The Temprature We also regard it as the start of the winter in the astronomy.But to some places ,its obvious that the winter is too late if we refer to the division. During the winter solstice,its usually below 0°c in the North and 6°c to 8°c in South.Its a clue that we should keep warm . The Diet Beijing wonton On winter solstice ,most of the people eat wonton In North and some people may eat ,too In South. Dumpling however poor or rich,everyone also eat dumplings ,which means family members get together . mutton（羊肉） It s said that human beings eat mutton that began in han dynasty and at the same times people hope that they can have a lucky start at the begin of the next year. red bean rice（红豆米饭） on the day ,a whole family usually eat polished glutinous rice together,which can drive out ghost that might afraid red bean. winter wine（冬酿酒） In some places such as SuZhou,people also drink wine and it can remove cold ,which also can express peoples good wishes of life. rice cake（糯糕） In Taiwan,people can make various shapes such as chickens, ducks, turtles, pig, ox, sheep that represent for auspicious animals. The Activity people may offer sacrifices to the ancestors,which they hope they can have harvest next year and at the same time they can dispel disease and be in good health.
