XI. The Modern United Kingdom and its Cultural Legacy （文化遗产） A. British Culture and its legacy When many people think of Great Britain and its empire, few realize the long lasting and deep cultural impact （影响）it has had on the rest of the world, both as a road for Western Culture and as a source of modernization （现代化根源）and change throughout the world. Perhaps the biggest legacy（历史遗产） is the fact that so many nations today use the English language as either an official （官方语言）, unofficial （不官方语言）, first or second language of their nation. The number of people who speak English as either a first or second language is just over 300 million. English is the third most spoken language in the world by population and area as it is spoken in over 107 nations as either a first or second language. Many of these nations were once part of the vast （广阔）British Empire. The above map shows nations where English is used as a primary language although it may not be official. As we reflect on British history we can clearly see where many of these nations formerly belonged to the British Empire. Compare the blue nations with the red nations … But with English, culture has also come. Many aspects of culture have been transferred via the English language to many nations around the world… Law Government Almost every aspect of standard modern technology (i.e. automobile, telephone, television etc.) Art Literature Music Sport (i.e. football, cricket etc.) Religion In particular interest is one of the last great British exports…British ‘Pop’ （流行、大众，年轻文化也可说“嬉皮士文化”）culture and the social change that followed in the 1960’s.
