In wireline networks, there is a fixed relationship between a terminal and its physical locations In contrast, mobile terminals (MT’s) are free to travel and thus its network access point changes as it moves around the network coverage area The ID of an MT no longer provides the current location information of the MT. How to keep track of mobile terminals? Why mobility management? An example: cellular network Caller’s telephone tunes to the strongest signal. Caller’s request includes both her and Callee’s telephone numbers. BS relays the request to the switch. The switch commands several BS’s to transit paging messages containing Callee’s number. Callee’s phone responds to the paging message by informing the system of its location. The switch commands Caller’s phone to tune to channel X and Callee’s phone to channel Y. The cellular phone conversation starts. During the conversation, Callee moves to a new cell. The system rearranges itself to maintain the conversation. What is mobility management? Mobility management is one of the most important and challenging problems The objective is for the network to determine the location of the MT at any time for both message delivery and maintaining connections as the MT is moving into a new area Maintain location information as MTs power-on, move, or power-off A function at network layer and above Types of mobility management Handoff management (keep the connection) Maintain a user’s connection as the MT continues to move and change its access point to the network.
