Ethnomethodology Itzel and Jesse Harold Garfinkel Born October 29, 1917 in Newark, New Jersey Father wanted him to learn a trade Attended the University of Newark in 1935 Classes were taught by students from Columbia University so they were theoretical Graduated in 1939 Received M.A. from UNC in 1942 Then studied with Parsons at Harvard Obtained PhD in 1952 Garfinkel Background Worked at Ohio State for two years before moving to Wichita, Kansas Studied juries and their deliberations and that is how he coined the term Ethnomethodology 1954 accepted a job as an assistant professor at UCLA Continued to research ethnomethodology Earned Cooley-Mead Award for lifetime contributions to sociology in 1995 Died in 2011 Influences Parsons was an early influence of Ethnomethodology in that some of the early initiatives were taken from Parsons book The Structure of Social Action Alfred Schutz and Edmund Husserl were also big influences Schutz’s phenomenological ideas (attitude and commonsense world), along with his methodology and concepts were a huge part of the development of Ethnomethodology Weber and the idea of empirical research also influenced Ethnomethodology Known for his “breaching experiments” Ethnomethodology The methods of ordinary people that are used on a daily basis to accomplish their everyday needs the study of ordinary members of society in the everyday situations in which they find themselves and the ways in which they use commonsense knowledge, procedures, and considerations to gain an underrstanding of, navigate in, and act on those situations “The study of ordinary society reveals how individuals work hard to maintain consistency, order, and meaning in their lives.” (Garfinkel, 2002) Accounts “Accounts are the ways in which acto
