In modern linguistics, the meaning of a word is often divided into two parts: denotation and connotation. Culture, which has a great influence on the connotation, is an important factor that cannot be ignored during the formation of a word’s meaning. This essay, by taking some animals as examples, compares the differences of cultural connotation of the words which describe animals in Chinese and French. Given the common character of the animals in two cultures, there are some similarities in the connotation. However in most cases, due to different cultures, the connotations are not only different but also even opposite. 　　Key words: Culture; Connotation; Animals 　　Résumé 　　Parmi les éléments d’une langue, le lexique est considéré comme le plus actif et aussi le plus sensible aux facteurs extralinguistiques. Cette caractéristique du lexique rend bien compliqué le sens des mots. Nombre de chercheurs constatent la pluralité des sens possibles d’un mot.La linguistique moderne oppose souvent la dénotation à la connotation. La culture, par son impact sur la langue, joue un r?le important dans la formation du sens extralinguistique, à savoir la connotation. Nous essayons d’analyser et comparer dans le présent article les connotations culturelles des noms d’animaux en chinois en fran?ais.
