Hardy lived and wrote in a time of difficult social change，when England was making its slow and painful transition from an old-fashioned，agricultural nation to a modern，industrial one. Though today he is remembered somewhat more for his novels，he was an acclaimed poet in his time and was buried in the prestigious Poet’s Corner of Westminster Abbey following his death in 1928. 　　The Return of the Native is Thomas Hardy’s sixth published novel. It derives from the experience of Hardy himself，who made his own return to his native country only a few years before the publication of the novel. The novel takes place entirely in the environs of Egdon Heath，and with the exception of the epilogue，Aftercourses，covers exactly a year and a day. It is a tragic story of Eustacia Vye，a beautiful young woman who yearns for passionate love and freedom from the Egdon Heath. And also Eustacia Vye is regarded as a raven-haired young beauty who chafes against her life on the heath and longs to escape it in order to lead the more adventure-filled life of the world. Some of the heathfolk think she is a witch. With only her grandfather for company，she finds herself bored with her life and looks for an ideal man who can take her away from this ‘prison’. Eustacia is having an on-off romance with Damon Wildeve who is the only person out of the inhabitants of the Heath who fits Eustacia’s ideals.
