Methods: The University Personality Inventory UPI was used to test the 21 492 freshmen during 2009~2012 in Nan-jing University of Financeand Economics. Results: The mental health of students had a favorable development, the proportion of the students with serious mental health problems was among 6.95%~8.38%, the proportion of the students with mental health problems was among 11.99%~20.54%. Compared the answers of the key questions,the proportion of yes in boys was significantly higher than those in girls （ p 0.05 ） ,the proprtion of older and younger students was higher than those in normal age （ p 0.05）,the pro-prtion of ordinary universities students was higher than those in key university and independent college （ p 0.05）, the top 10 mental health problems ware consistent in each grade. Conclu-sion: Colleges and universities should be insist in mental health survey in freshmen, improve mental health education, and focus on the groups with problems.
