She received her Engineer Diploma from the Bucharest Polytechnic Institute in Romania (1991), and her M.S. (1995) and Ph.D. (2000) in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Iowa. She worked at Michigan Tech as a visiting and research faculty for three years before joining Virginia Tech as an assistant professor in 2003. Dr. Sandu’s research focuses on modeling and simulation of multibody systems, uncertainty treatment in dynamical systems, parameter estimation for mechanical systems, stochastic soil and terrain modeling, on-road and off-road vehicle dynamics, tire and track modeling, and terramechanics. In 2012 she was elected ASME fellow, and also received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Service from the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech. In 2007 she received the SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award. Dr. Sandu is an active member of SAE, ASME, ISTVS, and ASEE; she is the SAE Chassis and Suspension Committee vice-chair and the ASME Vehicle Design Committee chair.
