He flew combat missions in Vietnam and was taken prisoner when his plane was shot down in October 1967. Although his captors offered to release him after six months due to his fathers high position in the U.S. military, McCain refused unless every man captured before him was also freed. He served five and a half years in a POW camp before his release in March 1973. He received the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. Mc Cain has over 20 years of experience and is a war veteran. Many believe this experience would help him in the conflicts America is current in. Many believe he would probably keep things close to the same as Bush.
