History : The fossil site was first discovered in 1842, by Abraham Gesner 1797–1864 , a geologist and medical doctor, and a pioneer in the petroleum industry. Gesner found a vast array of important fossils, which were handed over to the British Museum and the Royal Scottish Museum; these discoveries caused great excitement throughout the world. * Miguasha National Park Content : Where is it What is there history The peripheral area is owned by 1~100 people who limit development, protecting this important site. To date, over 5000 fossils from this one site have been identified and categorized. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999. Fauna动物群 and flora植物群 Miguasha National Park is considered to be the world‘s greatest palaeontological古生物学 record of fossils from the Devonian Period泥盆纪, known as the ’Age of Fishes‘. Five of the six main fossil fish groups from this period dating from 370 million years ago can be found here. A great quantity of some of the best-preserved fossil specimens of lobe-finned fish, ancestors to the tetrapods四只动物 believed to be the first four-legged air-breathing terrestrial vertebrates脊椎动物 , were found here. Fauna动物群 The site’s existing fauna is unexceptional. Its designation is entirely for its fossil remains. A two-million-year representation of Devonian泥盆纪 life is preserved in the remarkably rich fossil beds exposed in the cliffs of Miguasha. There more than 100 vertebrate脊椎动物 species notably fish, invertebrate species such as the 30cm Petaloscorpio bureaui, the first terrestrial scorpion蝎子, a fossil centipede蜈蚣 discovered in 2003, ten species of primitive plants, algae藻类 and micro-organisms微生物.
