Pronombre Personal Objeto Indirecto Indirect Object The indirect object IO tells us where the direct object DO is going. -He gives the book to Laura. DO: Book Where is the book going? To Laura. IO: Laura - He gives Laura the book. DO: Book Where is the book going? To Laura. IO: Laura The indirect object answers the question ‘To whom?’ or ‘For whom?’ the action of the verb is performed. -él da a Teresa el libro. He gives Teresa the book. To whom does he give the book? To Teresa. IO: Teresa -él compra flores a Laura He buys flowers to Laura For whom does he buy the flowers? For Laura. IO: Laura Preposition a – Personal a In Spanish, the indirect object is always preceded by the preposition a: -Juan escribe una carta a su novia Juan writes a letter to his girlfriend Remember that in Spanish an a may also introduce the direct object when the direct object is a person. This time, the word a personal a has no English translation In the sentence - Juan ve a Sonia. Juan sees Sonia the a doesn’t mean ‘to’ and is simply introducing the direct object, since Sonia is the person directly affected by the verb she is seen . So ‘a Sonia’ would be replaced by a direct object pronoun and not an indirect one: - Juan la ve Juan sees her From the perspective of the English speaker, the personal ‘a’ appears to be an extra word. From the perspective of the Spanish speaker, the personal ‘a’ is required, and to not use it is a serious error. - Jorge llama a Susana. Jorge calls Susana The personal ‘a’ may also be used if the direct object is a domesticated animal, especially a pet, provided that the speaker attaches some sort of personal feelings towards the animal. - La mujer acaricia a su perro. The woman pets her dog. Sentences that have an indirect object usually also have a direct object. Remember, the IO tells us where the DO is going. Notice how the sentences below just wouldnt work without a direct object. -He gives Sonia . . . the book, the pen, the diamon
