The whole earth is coved by gaseous mixture of CH4, CO2, CO, N2, NH3…. The oxygen production life (Cyanobacteria) appeared 2.3 billions years ago. The earth environment changed gradually. The appearance of photosynthesis generated an explosive biomass production. The overall environment became more aerobic. However, anaerobic organisms continued to grow in anaerobic niches, such as marshes, sediments, wetlands. Today, the main source of methane production is acetate and hydrogen derived from anaerobic digestion of biomass and organic wastes (small part) Anaerobic digestion-a natural approach Basic principle: application of natural anaerobic consortia of microorganisms for the transmission and degradation processes All high rate anaerobic digestion reactors are to try to maintain high concentration of microorganisms. In wastewater treatment, generally, methanogenisis is the rate-limiting step In solid waste treatment, generally, hydrolysis (Acidogenisis) is the rate-limiting step Some basic terminology ANAEROBIC a technical word which literally means without air (where air is generally used to mean oxygen), as opposed to aerobic In wastewater treatment the absence of oxygen is indicated as anoxic; and anaerobic is used to indicate the absence of a common electron acceptor such as
