Chapter 7 Packet-Switching Networks Network Services and Internal Network Operation Packet Network Topology Datagrams and Virtual Circuits Routing in Packet Networks Shortest Path Routing ? ATM Networks Traffic Management Homework 3, 23, 29, 32, 33, 51 Introduction Traditional telephone networks operate on the basis of circuit switching. A call setup process reserves resources (time slots) along a path so that the voice transfered with very low delay. This approach is inefficient when information is small or is produced intermittently in bursts, as is the case in many computer applications. Packet-switching network can be designed to support computer applications and real-time application such as telephone. Two Perspectives to Packet Networks One perspective involves an external view of network and is concerned with services that the network provides to transport layer. network service: connection or not, QoS or not. A second perspective is concerned with internal operation of a network. Network physical topology, interconnection of links, switches, and routers. Directing information across network: datagrams, or virtual circuits. Addressing and routing, congestion, traffic management with QoS. Compare BC/LAN with Packet-Switching Network from Two Perspective First perspective involving services provided to the layer above, no difference. Second perspective BC/LAN: network is small, addressing is simple, frame transferred in one hop, so no routing required. Packet-switching network: addressing in large-scale networks, with routing algorithms. Addressing and Routing are the essence of the network layer. Introduction to Courses Sequently In Chapter 7 we deal with the general issues regarding packet-switching networks. In chapter 8 and In chapter 9 deal with specific architectures, namely, IP packet networks and ATM packet network respectively. This chapter is organized as follows Network services and internal network operation Physical view of networks: role of mult
