Unit Three Status Enquiries Step 1 Introduction trade background When you decide to enter into trade relations with other firms in foreign countries, the most important thing is to obtain some information about them, mainly including 1.the financial position/ standing/ status 2.the credit 3.the reputation 4.the business methods There are various ways of obtaining such information. Instead of applying to a business friend, traders usually apply to: 1.banks 2.Chamber of Commerce 3.enquiry agencies The information obtained from the above mentioned are generally most reliable. A bank will not give any information directly to an unknown trader unless the enquiry is from its own banks. Therefore, when taking up a bank reference, the trader must do so through its own bank. Letters enquiring status are more or less stereotyped, and the words “Confidential” or “Private and Confidential” are generally put in the place of the subject heading. And these words are also written on the envelope so that the reader would give best attention to it. Replies to status enquires are also carried “Private and Confidential”. Structure: Letters asking for information are usually written like this: Openings: 1.We would like you to enquire into the financial position of… 2.We would be grateful if you would furnish us with details as to the credit of the firm mentioned on the attached slip. 3.We should be obliged if you could give us some information on the financial and credit standing of the concerned company. Endings: 1.Any information you may give us will be treated strictly in confidence. We assure you of our reciprocating your courtesy at any time. 2.We shall be most grateful for any assistance you can give us. Letters to enquiries are written with facts and opinions for consideration. Openings: 1.In reply to your letter of…we are pleased to say that… 2.The firm about which you enquire in your letter of… is a leading importer in this city. 3.We regret being unable
