Reflection on English Vocabulary Teaching
一. Current Situation of Vocabulary Teaching among Students
With the rapid development of science and technology, the “global village” is becoming smaller and smaller. English, as widely used tool for communication around the world, has become the most popular language in China. “In China, lexicology has become the compulsory or selected course for students”(Lei Yu, 2013:10). Vocabulary teaching is one of the most important steps in language teaching. It has been argued that the ultimate goal of English teaching is to cultivate the ability of communication (Feng Junying, 2010:157). Vocabulary teaching have made many achievements. With vocabulary textbooks sprung up, many vocabulary teaching materials on the market have been appeared so that the students could not distinguish which one is the best. What is more, traditional English teaching method has been permeated to multidisciplinary. It not only includes learning English language, but also involves trade, automobile, business and so on. Chinese learners learn English from junior high school. To a large extent, they have learned it many years. The foreign language teaching depends on effectiveness of vocabulary teaching, including the students’ capacity of vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary proficiency. Nowadays, English vocabulary teaching not only pay attention to the spelling of words, but also takes listening, speaking, reading and writing into consideration. Teachers not only pay attention to the scores of text, but also the students’ overall ability. Many teachers adopt associative memory to enhance cognitive ability of vocabulary teaching. For example, teachers associate family with grandfather, grandmother, father and mother. Some teachers also associate English songs and English stories to deepen their understanding of vocabulary.
