Tian Tan (the Temple of Heaven) Built in the southern part of Beijing, the Temple of Heaven is known for its striking architectural beauty. There the emperors of the Ming(1368—1644) and Qing (1644—1911) dynasties held ceremonies to worship heaven. In winter, they offered sacrifices at the Circular Mound Altar and in spring, they worshipped at the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest. The Temple of Heaven covers some 270 ha. of land, an area 3 times as large as (or 2 times larger than) that of the Imperial Palace. The Temple of Heaven is actually a group of temple buildings; the main structures are the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, the Circular Mound Altar, and the Hall of Abstinence. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest is a circular structure built entirely of wood without a single nail. It is 38 m. in height, and 30 m. in diameter. It has a conical roof with 3 layers of eaves supported by 28 huge pillars. The nearby Imperial Vault of Heaven is a circular structure with deep blue glazed tiles. A low wall, known as the Echo Wall, circles the vault.
