International Symposium on Official Development Assistance (ODA) for Population and Development 人口与发展国际援助研讨会 26th – 28th October 2005, Suzhou, China Theme 5: Promotion of Human Rights and Gender Equality Remarks by Hon (Prof) Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, Minister of Planning and National Development, Government of the Republic of Keny It is my great honor and pleasure to join with you here in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, to participate in the International Symposium/ on Official Development Assistance for Population and Development. Permit me to begin by thanking the Government of the People’s Republic of China, through the National Population and Family Planning Commission of China, for organizing this important event, and the authorities of Suzhou in particular, for their warm and generous hospitality. Mr. Chairman: The Millennium Declaration of September 2000 commits all UN Member states/ to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women as critical/ of combating poverty, hunger and disease,/and as a necessary means for stimulating a truly sustainable development. Gender equality is, indeed, a Human Rights and Justice issue/ and must not be seen, whatsoever, as just another of those ordinary women’s matters. Mr. Chairman: Ensuring gender equity and equality,/ and the empowerment of women as a whole, depend, in part,/ on overcoming a debilitating list of various cultural, social and economic constraints/ that limit women’s access to a variety of goodies,/ not in the least, necessary access to reproductive health education and services/ that allow them to protect their health;/ control their fertility and develop their full potential/ in all aspects of public and private life. The removal of social and family barriers to women’s equal participation/ in the social, economic and political life, as well as need to combat the reality of violence against women, are essential to this process of empowerment. / Similarly, Reproductive Health rights - such
