Ask them to read the sample “Cats over Dogs” Arrange group discussion: i) to get the thesis statement and the topic sentences; ii) to see how the topic sentence is supported in the paragraph. Introduce the 9 rhetorical modes. Ask them to re-read the sample and analyze the supporting sentences in terms of rhetorical modes. Ask them to read two more samples: “Plants over Pets”; “Buses over Cars” Arrange group discussion to analyze the supporting techniques in the two samples.
