Ⅱ. Relevance and translation
Sperber and Wilson believe that people use the ostensive-inferential model in their language communication. The reason why people make inference is not that they want to prove whether some communicative activities have relevance to one another, but to find such an inner correlation and achieve its best effects, which demonstrate that people have already understook there must be the instrinsical correlation in people’s words before they spare no efforts to research it(Qu Weiguo, 1993). Meanwhile, relevance is a relative concept, which is determined by two factors—processing efforts and contextual efforts. According to relevance theory, people expect an optimal relevance in their process of communication, namely “the hearers attain adequate contextual effects after they have made an effort to understand the words”. That is the major point of relevance principle in relevance theory, “every ostensive act of communication is supposed to be known as its own best correlation.” (Sperber Wilson, 1986; Chinese translation version quoted from He Ziran, Ran Yongping, 1998) The relevance theory of translation regards translation as the process of reference involved in a mechanism of the human brains, so it is an act of verbal communication. According to the relevance theory of translation, translation is the process of inference; the objects that translation studies is not the discourse itself or the process which produces discourse but the mechanism of human brains. Gutt defines translation as follows: translation versions should be the target discourses which are similar with the original versions (interpretively resembling). (Gutt, 1991, the translation version quoted from Lin Kenan, 1994) In Zhao Yanchun’s book The Explanatory Power to Translation with Revelance Theory (1999), she defines translation as “an act of ostensive inferential intralingual or interlingual interpretation of source text”.
