Robert Browning (1812-1889) Robert Browning Robert Browning (7 May 1812 – 12 December 1889) was an English poet and playwright whose mastery of dramatic verse (Dramatic verse occurs in a dramatic work, such as a play, composed in poetic form. The tradition of dramatic verse extends at least as far back as ancient Greece), especially dramatic monologues(戏剧独白), made him one of the foremost Victorian poets. Browning’s Early Literary Career He began to write poetry while still quite young, influenced by P. B. Shelley. But his earliest works earned him nothing but some negative attention for their expression of strong sensations and their morbid tone. Thus for a time he set poetry aside to work on plays, finding in their fictional world an apt space for experimentation and development as a creative mind. Most of the plays did not find success, however, and Browning turned back again to verse. Robert Browning (1812-1889) Brownings first important poem was Paracelsus (1835), a long dramatic monologue. The poem achieved popular success, establishing Browning as a familiar name with the reading public. In 1841 Pippa Passes, a loosely structured set of poems. Married the poet Elizabeth Barrett (1806-1861), and settled with her in Florence. He produced comparatively little poetry during the next 15 years. After Elizabeth Browning died in 1861, he returned to England. Robert Browning (1812-1889) 1842: Dramatic Lyrics; and 1845: Dramatic Romances and Lyrics. 1855: Men and Women; and 1864: Dramatis Personae, though not wild successes, they contain most of the poems today considered central to the Browning canon. But the poet achieved true literary stardom with the publication of his verse novel The Ring and the Book (1869), a historical tragedy based on the proceedings in a murder trial in Rome in 1698.
