This number is less than the numbers of teachers for other disciplines. The author figured that there is a shortage of totally 300 000 physical education teachers in China, and 3/4 of them are in elementary schools. The reasons for the shortage of physical education teachers are the followings: the physical education discipline is not highly regarded; physical education teachers are not sufficiently staffed; there is a lack of physical education staffing system and the quality of physical education teacher cultivation is not high. The authors offered such related suggestions as scientifically examine physical education teacher staffing as well as establish and implement policies and measures conducive to strengthening the buildup of physical education teachers.
