2,000 years ago, Pompeii lay at the center of a fertile valley with abundant water. In a wide gulf at the sea known as M. rich in fishing and easily navigated It was a city based on trade, cloth and other manufactured goods, but above all, its precious wines and its garum, the sauce which drove the Roman gourmets wild. In a painting of that period, Vesuvius is depicted as a tranquil mountain covered with trees and vineyard. 79 years after the birth of Christ on the 24th August, that idyllic peace was suddenly shattered, Vesuvius erupted with terrible fury.
