IV.Major Voices Emily Dickinson Wendy Martin When Emily Dickinson died of Brights disease, a kidney disorder, on May 15, 1886, her brother Austin listed her occupation as At Home on her death certificate. The fifty-five-year-old poet died in the same house in Amherst, Massachusetts, in which she was born and lived her entire life. Soon after her burial in the family plot, her sister Lavinia found forty-four sewn packets or fascicles of poems that Emily had written, as well as several others on scraps of paper or loose sheets.
