* * * * * * * * Cell Respiration Chapter Seven What is Cell Respiration? The process of converting organic compounds (food) into ATP (energy) Overall Reaction Glucose + 6 oxygen= 6 water + 6 carbon dioxide + energy C6H12O6 + 6 O2 = 6 H2O + 6 CO2 + ATP Cell Respiration’s formula is the exact opposite of photosynthesis Both plant and animal cells undergo cell respiration Cell Respiration Overview Where do organic compounds come from? Plants- make own food from photosynthesis Animals- consume others to obtain food Glycolysis ALWAYS FIRST STEP Location- cytoplasm of cell Reactants- Glucose, 2 ATP, 2 NAD+ Products- 2 Pyruvic acid, 4 ATP, 2 NADH Nets in 2 ATP being produced Glycolysis Steps of Glycolysis Glucose is split into 2 3-Carbon molecules ATP is required, NADH (energy molecule) is formed Molecule is converted into Pyruvic Acid 4 ATP are made What happens to Pyruvic Acid? Becomes reactant for the next step Next step oxygen present = aerobic respiration Next step no oxygen= fermentation Fermentation Process of converting pyruvic acid into other compounds without oxygen (anaerobic) Important because it remakes NAD+ for glycolysis Two Types Alcoholic Lactic Acid Alcoholic Fermentation Converts Pyruvic acid into Alcohol and Carbon dioxide Uses NADH as energy source Used to make Beer Bread Wine Lactic Acid Fermentation Converts Pyruvic acid into Lactic Acid using NADH as energy source Used to make Yogurt Cheese Pickles Causes muscle soreness Aerobic Respiration Pathway requiring oxygen that can make 20x more ATP Steps Pyruvic Conversion Kreb’s Cycle Electron Transport Chain Where does it occur? Prokaryotes- cytoplasm Eukaryotes- Mitochondria Organelle with two membranes Inner folds called cristae Inner area called matrix Conversion/Kreb Cycle Occurs in the Matrix These reactions form Carbon dioxide NADH FADH2 ATP Totals Made 10 NADH- 6 Krebs, 2 glycolysis, 2 conversion 2 FADH2- both Krebs 4 ATP- 2 glycolysis, 2 Krebs 6 CO2- 2 conversion, 4 Krebs Electron Tra
