This volume is called Cardiac Output. Stroke Volume is the amount of blood pumped out of the heart with each beat. Cardiac output is equivalent to the heart rate times the stroke volume Heart Rate is the number of heartbeats per unit of time, usually expressed as beats per minute. Ejection Fraction or, more correctly, left ventricular ejection fraction (often abbreviated LVEF) is a measure of how much blood the left ventricle of the heart pumps out with each contraction. The normal left ventricle has an average volume of 100ml and with each heart beat ejects approximately 70 ml, the stroke volume. The ventricles only pump out part of the blood they contain with each beat. They can’t eject all the blood since that would leave a vacuum. If there are 125 cc in the left ventricle at the end of diastolic filling, about 75 cc will be ejected by a healthy ventricle – in other words, about 60%. The ejection fraction is the amount of blood pumped out with each beat compared to the amount of blood that was originally in the ventricle. EF can be measured during a cardiac catherization, by echo or MUGA scan.
