为失子之痛寻找新意义
It’s impossible to measure the volume of pain as the dozen or so parents, mostly women, introduce themselves.
Terry: My name is Terry. My son is Jamie and he was murdered nine years ago.
Maya Thompson: I’m Maya, I’m Ronan’s mom. Ronan was diagnosed[诊断] with cancer at the age of three, passed away…eight months later.
34-year-old Maya Thompson rarely comes to this grief[悲痛] support group. A year and a half after her son died, it is still too painful. Ronan was a sturdy[强健的] little guy with blue eyes so striking[惹人注目的] you did a double take.
Flipping[翻书页] through a photo album, she says Ronan was her third son and the most robust[精力充沛的], rarely having a sniffle[抽鼻涕].
Thompson: This was about two weeks before he was diagnosed, and he looks perfectly happy and healthy. And he was fine, right? But he wasn’t.
The cancer spread invisibly[看不见地] until one day Maya noticed Ronan’s left eyelid[眼睑] was drooping[低垂]. At first, the doctors thought it was an infection[感染] or a sty[麦粒肿]. Eventually they realized the boy had stage four neuroblastoma[成神经细胞瘤]―a cancer of the nervous system.
The Thompson’s are not a religious[信奉宗教的] family. Instead of turning to God, Maya turned on the computer. She began blogging right after Ronan was diagnosed. The first entry[条目] is hopeful.
Thompson: (reading) Neuroblastoma is very treatable[可治疗的] and even curable[可医治的]. We have our plan in place and the Thompson family combat boots[军靴] are on. We are...
Initially[最初], Maya and her husband, Woody, were optimistic[乐观的] even though 70% of children with stage four neuroblastoma die.
Over the next eight months, Maya wrote in her blog. At first it was for family and friends, but soon it began drawing millions of readers. Maya’s writing was raw[未加工的], lurc
