(一)Reading Strategy: reading a history article
What you have read is a typical history article. When you are reading a history articles, you will notice dates and years in the text. e.g., the 5th century, 1066. Identifying these details will help you understand a sequence of events and how pieces of information relate to the rest of the text. Nest time when you read a history article, it is a good idea to make a time chart, listing relevant information such as times, places and events, etc. in the article. For a sample time chart, look at page 58 of this book. You can certainly create a different type of time chart, for example, a table. Just make sure that it helps you understand the text.

Time Events Before the middle of 5th century People in Britain all spoke a language called Celtic. At the end of 9th century The Vikings, including Denmark and Norway, began to invade Britain. They brought with them their languages. By 10th century Old English was the official language of England. In 1066 The Normans conquered England and took control of the country. By the latter half of 14th century English was adopted by all classed in England. In 1399 Henry IV became King of England. He used English for all official occasions. During the Renaissance in 16th century Modern English began.
