(1900-1965)U.S.statesman,borninLosAngeles,Calif.,receivedlawdegreefromNorthwesternUniversity1926,electedgovernorofiIIinoisin1948byaLargemajorityvote,DemocraticcandidateforU.S.presidentin1952and,1956butdefeatedbythepopularDwightD.,Eisenhower,knownasaneloquenteaker.******************** Mr.President,ladiesandgentlemenoft heconvention,myfellowcitize,Iacceptyournominationandyourprogram.Ishouldhepreferredtohearthosewordsutteredbya stronger,awiserabettermanthanmyself,butafterlisteningtothePresident’seech,IevenfeelbetteraboutmyselfNoneofyou,myfriends,canwhollyareciatewhatisinmyheart.I canonlyhopethatyouunderstandmywords,theywillbefewIhenotsoughtthehonoryouhedoneme.IcouldnotseekitbecauseIairetoanotheronce,whichwasthefullmeasureofmyambition,andonedoesnottreatthehighestofficewithinthegiftsofthepeopleofIllinoisasanalternativeorasacoolationprize.IwouldnotseekyournominationforthePresidencybecausetheburdeofthatofficestaggertheimagination.It’spotentialfoodorevil,nowandintheyearsofourlives,smothersexaltatioandconvertsvanitytoprayer. I’veaskedthemercifulFather,theFatherofusall,toletthiscuppaonme,butfromsuchdreadreoibilityonedoesnotshrinkinfear,inselfinterest,orinfalsehumilitySoifthiscupmaynotpafromme,Iaccept,Idrinkit,Iwillbedone.Thatmyhearthasbeentroubled,thatIhenotsoughtthisnomination,thatIcouldnotseekitingoodcocience,thatIwouldnotseekitinhonestselfaraisal,isnottosaythatIvalueitthele.RatheritisthatIreveredtheofficeofthePresidencyoftheUnitedStates.Andnowmyfriendsthatyouhemadeyourdecision,Iwillfighttowinthatofficewithallmyheartandmysoul.Andwithyourhelp,Ihenodoubtthatwewillwin.
