The writer Michael Grunwald is a reporter for The Washington Post. He has won the George Polk Award for national reporting, the Worth Bingham Award for investigative reporting and numerous other prizes, including the Society of Environmental Journalists Award for his reporting on the national park Everglades. His book The Swamp was published in 2007. The book is about the Everglades. The Everglades was once reviled as a liquid wasteland, and the Americans dreamed of draining it. Now it is revered as a national treasure, and the Americans have launched the largest environmental project in history to try to save it. The style of this passage is that of an editorial. In general, editorials are written in three major parts: a) statement; b) proof; c) conclusion (or editorial knot). The statement is usually italicized and is put ahead of other paragraphs. Its main function is to arouse the readers interests in further reading. The beginning couple of paragraphs are focused on the major points to be proved in the article. The passage can be used for understanding the style of an editorial and thus for learning different writing styles. This can be important for students in their future career if they need to write articles for different readers.
