Teaching objectives:
1. To read a magazine article about school life in the UK. ?
2. To learn to apply two basic reading skills: skimming and scanning.
3. To learn some expressions about school life.

Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Warming-up.
Listen to the tape, I will give you a story, listen to it carefully, and then retell it.
(Retell: use your own words to describe the story that you have heard, tell us what the story say, but not recite.)
Ask two students to retell the story.
Comment: the story describes a boy’s life in his high middle school. It is really a funny story.

Step 2 Leading-in questions:
When we mention the phrase “school life”, what do you associate with?
(Your teacher, your classmates, your study, your campus?or?your subjects)
These are our school lives, now let us see how the school life in the UK. And after learning the text answer the question “what are the differences between the lives of Chinese and British high school students?”

Step 3 Reading
Explain two words: skimming and scanning
Skimming: We skim a text, when we want to get a general idea of what it is about. We look the titles and the first and last sentences of paragraphs and the first and last paragraphs as well as pictures and charts to guess what the text is about.
Scanning:?When we want to find certain information in a text quickly, we san the text for key words and phrases, dates, numbers, ect. We do not need to read the whole text word by word.
