Warm-up activities Procedure: Have Ss divide into groups of four or six; Have them ask each other whether they’ve experienced any failures or successes in their lives and discuss how one can turn failure into success; Put the following questions on the board for their reference. Questions: Do you think it’s shameful to talk about your own failures? What do you count as a failure in a person’s life? Can you recall any particular failure your own that upset you very much? What effect did that failure have on you? What do you think of it now? What do you count as a success in a person’s life? What has been the most significant success in your life? Why? What price did you pay for your success? What if you failed again? II. Background information 1. Fredelle Maynard (1922-1989) Fredelle Maynard received her M.A. (English) from the University of Toronto in 1944, and her Ph.D. (English Literature) from Radcliffe College (Harvard University) in 1947. Maynard began publishing magazine articles in the 1950s that dealt with issues such as health, children, education, marriage, and family. She became a noted expert on child care and was well-received as a public speaker. In the mid 1970s, Maynard moved to Toronto, Ontario, where she continued to publish both magazine articles and books. In 1985, she published The Child Care Crisis, and in 1988 her final book, The Tree of Life, was published. Maynard was also a popular host of two television show on parenting. Maynard was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1989. She died on October 3, 1989. 2. Hayakawa (1906-1992) Samuel Ichiye Hayakawa was a scholar, university president and U.S. senator from California (1977-1983). He is best known for his popular writings on semantics (the study of meanings of words and sentences) and for his career as president of San Francisco State College (now San Francisco State University).
