1. Introduction
1.1 Background of the Research
An increasing number of people around the world have involved the wave of English-learning since the occurrence of economic globalization and universities in China also have paid close attention to students’ English education. Under this background, university students’ four basic English skills---listening, speaking, reading and writing have been concerned widely by scholars at home and abroad. English writing, as a basic skill of English learning, is an essential way to measure the English level of university students. In order to improve university students’ English writing, different ways have been put forward. “FLTRP Cup” National English Writing Competition, a contest designed for undergraduate students who are of Chinese nationality and study in general institutes of higher education, started in 2012, and it aims to promote the teaching of English writing, improve students’ English writing skills and lead the development and reform of foreign language teaching in colleges and universities. According to the rules, Yuxi Normal University is entitled to have the preliminary. However, these students who participated in the contest have various errors in their English narrative essays. Speaking objectively, it is a pity that just a few of them focus on narration genre although there are many scholars studying the errors in university students’ English writing all the time. Therefore, based on previous studies, this paper is aimed at investigating the general errors in the English narrative writing of university students by taking 2014 “FLTRP Cup” English Writing Competition of Yuxi Normal University as an example and put forward some corresponding strategies that can help university students gradually avoid these general errors in their English narrative writing.
