There are two main tasks : Writing the news stories Laying out the newspaper Writing the stories This is the job a reporter on a newspaper would do . The actual information for the stories has been provided for you . When a reporter interviews someone , they can either take notes , or they might use a small tape - recorder to record the interview . You have these tape recordings written out for you . (This is called a transcription) . Laying out the newspaper This task is done by a number of people in the newspaper . The reporter produces the actual text of the story . The editor (or one of the sub - editors) then decides how important the story is . If it’s a really important story , it goes on the front page . If it’s not quite so important , it goes on one of the inside pages . So one of your jobs will be to decide which of the stories you are going to use , and where they will go in your paper . The other main job is to make all the stories fit on the page . The editor partly does this , by reading through the draft copy of each story , and cutting out stuff that isn’t needed , (or more likely telling the reporter to do this !) . Then it’s up to the page designer to use the computer software to make the headlines , stories and possibly pictures or graphics fit on to the page . So at different stages in the work , you are reporter , editor and page designer , (and possibly all three at the same time !) .
