Chapter 19 At the Dinner 19.1 Background Information In international business activities, inviting a customer for dinner is the common method to develop and promote the relations with customers. When holding appointments and banquets, you should pay attention to the following matters: (1) Determine the purpose of activities; (2) Determine the numbers of the people being invited ; (3) Choose the right time for you both; (4) When choose the place, you should consider the guest’s personality, hobby and the cultural background; (5) When inviting important guests, the host must make formal invitations. Coming to familiar clients, host can phone or make oral invitation. Make the purpose of the invitation, the time and the place clear; (6) Before the start of the activity, the host shall personally or let others to meet the guests at the door; (7) The master should take care of all the guests during activities. If there are guests who don’t know each other, he must introduce them to each other; (8) During the party, the host and the guests can toast to or thank each other; (9) When the dinner is over, the host had better see the guest off at the gate. 19.2 Situational Conversation Section 1: At the Dinner (1) A: Good evening, Paul. B: Good evening, Johns. Great to see you again. Did you have a good trip? A: Yes, it was a good flight. I was a little tired yesterday, but I am OK now. B: Great. Nice to meet you too. Here’s mine. Section 2: At the Dinner (2) A: Wow, it’s a nice dinner. So many foods and drinks! I am so thankful and excited. B: You will try our Indian specialty. Hope you will enjoy it. A: Of course I will. See the color of the food. And it smells delicious. I am eager to try. B: Go ahead. Just help yourself. A: I’m leaving tomorrow. It’s a very nice trip. B
