It is a kind of belief that anyone can achieve ideals as long as they struggle for it. An American Tragedy is a topical novel which tells about American dream and can reveal the profound American historical background and people’s pursuit of America dream. Thus, this paper attempts to make a survey of these researches of An American tragedy to help us get a better understanding about the breaking of American dream. Therefore the paper will mainly analyze the character of the hero Clyde for his American dream in An American Tragedy, then reveals a more profound historical background and practical significance of people’s pursuit of America dream. Through the research of analysis of Clyde’s broken American dream we could be more clear that how we response to the the hot topic Chinese dream and what can we do for meeting our targets in the modern world .
