Wage Issues of Rural Migrants Research Center for Rural Economy, Ministry of Agriculture (National Rural Fixed Site Survey Office) Abstract Utilizing the survey data from 2003 to 2006 of National Rural Fixed Site Survey Office, the paper makes an analysis on wage changes of rural migrants in recent years. The findings come out as: from the year of 2003 to 2006, the monthly wages of rural migrants per capita increases 22.0 percent, and grows steadily year by year; the proportion of rural migrants with monthly wages of above RMB 600 goes up; the wage growth rate of male rural migrants rises faster than the female; the wages of rural migrants who have gotten vocational training increase more rapidly, and those who are employed in the service sectors of agriculture, architecture, business and catering enjoy a comparatively high wage growth rate. The factors supporting the rapid wage increase of rural migrants can be concluded as follows: the demand for rural migrants increases attributed to the stable growth of national economy; the improving employment policies give a better safeguard of rural migrants’ right and interests; the jump of agricultural labor cost causes the heightening expectation of rural migrants for wage earning; The technical qualification of rural migrants is upgraded owning to the strengthened vocational training. However, although the wage of rural migrants increased in the past few years, there is still a rather big gap compared to that of urban employees, either in terms of absolute wage earnings or its growth rate. In order to further accelerate the transfer of rural labor force and increase the wage level of rural migrants, on the one hand it is to expand the employment channels to increase the employment opportunities for farmers; on the other hand it is to substantially improve the employment environment for rural labor force to reduce the employment cost.
