EXU of ACS 6000 supplies three phase voltage to the stator of the motor. “Transformer connection” is used to supply this three phase Excitation voltage to rotor. Diode rectifier used to rectify three phase AC voltage in rotor is rotating with the rotor. Because of the lack of sliprings requires less maintenance than direct excitation. * * * * * * Thyristor fuses: In direct excitaton each thyristor is equipped with individual fuse. Brushless excitaton has only theree fuses, one for each phase. Fuses integrate switch detector. Thyristor snubber circuit: For protection against rate of voltage rise (du/dt), each thyristor has own RC-snubber circuit. The snubber resistors main function is to protect the thyristor against sudden voltage rises. The resistor is activated all the time, even when the thyristor is not conducting. This means that the resistor is using a small amount of power all the time. But the biggest resistor losses which affect the efficiency occurs when the thyristor is being turned off. C=1μF / 3000V * R=39Ω / 250W / 5000V * * Values are given as an example. * Overvoltage protection: In the output of the bridge and simultaneously between the terminals of the excitation winding, a thyristor switch is connected. This is a bi-directional thyristor switch where thyristors are fired by BOD:s (Break Over Diode) in case of overvoltage detection (2900V). Big resistor limits current inside protective thyristor.
