Good evening, Miss Han and my lovely classmates: Tonight I will talk about western modern art. What is art? Too many definitions. Here I take its narrow sense: The fine arts, the visual arts，in Chinese we called it 美术. Before starting to talk about western modern art, I’d like to review briefly the history of western art. From this list, you can tell that art developed as humans developed. Prehistoric art was found in caves in Spain and France. Those were wall paintings. Ancient art was created by Greeks and Romans. Medieval art is represented by amazing decorative paintings in churches from the 5th to the 15th century. Renaissance Art, we all know the three masters: Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. Baroque Art was in Italy and Rococo Art was in France. Realism 写实主义 represents subject truthfully. Impressionism印象派, was the mainstream of French art during the last 30 years of the 19th century, which is also my favorite art style. Impressionists pursued light and colors. Monet’s Sunrise Impression, Van Gogh’s Sunflower and Manet’s Lunch on Grassland are world-famous. When I visited the Musée d’Orsay in Paris last summer, I was really excited!!! Because Orsay is famous for its collection of impressionist paintings. But today I will talk about western modern art over the past 100 years. What is western modern art? I think one word can describe it, and that is Avant-garde. Art historians have classified western modern art into many styles. Here I will mainly focus on 9 styles. I will give the figurative artists’ names and their representative works as the examples of each style. 1. Fauvism 野兽派 They are wild about using bright and strong colors, sometime they will directly squeeze the paint onto the canvas to create intense visual effects. 2.Futurism未来主义originated in Italy. Why?
