To the Chinese universities, appropriate and accurate translation of their mottos plays a crucial role in their interaction with the outside world. This thesis compares and contrasts the Chinese university mottos with the Western ones, puts forward three principles on the translations of Chinese mottos. Then it advances the three principles on translating Chinese university mottos and applies them to translating the school motto of Xi’an Technological University.
