As a mirror of human life， it depends on author’s writing purpose and emotion which leaves it a degree of freedom. On the one hand， perceptual and vivid， human life is a real reference to environmental description. It is said that the unique features of a local environment always give special characteristics to its inhabitants. Stories come therefrom. Different environmental descriptions will give readers various indications in course of the development of the whole novel and make known authors’ attitude or protagonists’ mental activities. 　　D.H Laurence （1885-1930） was one of the greatest， the most original and controversial British writers in the 20th century. He was not only famous for his ten novels， but also known for many of his popular short stories. Odour of Chrysanthemums was written in 1919， dealing with Elizabeth， wife of a miner， who was waiting for her husband Walt to return home. She couldn’t help feeling anxious and angry because she believed that he must have go drink. However， finally， what came into her eyes was the cold body of her husband who had died of suffocation in a collapse. In spite of the simple structure， there are many attractive environmental descriptions in this novel.
