Fat: thick or wide Usual collocations: a fat volume/book, a fat cat, a fat salary/check, a fat chance (unlikely, not unlikely) Notice the subtle differences between fat, plump, chubby, stout and obese be immersed in: become completely involved in sth that you are doing; to be completely covered or submerged in a liquide e.g. He’s really becoming immersed in his work. immerse oneself in sth: He left school at 16 and immersed himself in the Labour party. immersion: n. a sea of people or things is a very large number of them together. e.g. His eyes ran over the sea of bottles and glasses on the table. be all at sea: be in a state of confusion or uncertainty e.g. Living in a foreign country can mean you’re always at sea about what’s going on. at sea: under or on the sea, far away from land e.g. He spent over 30 years at sea The professional historian is simply one who… Simply: a. only; nothing but e.g. It is simply a matter of time. Some students lose marks simply because they don’t read the question properly. It’s not simply a question of money b. used to emphasize what you are saying e.g. This work is simply not good enough. He simply won’t accept the committee’s decision. c. if you say or explain something simply, you say it in a way that is easy for people to understand e.g. Try to express yourself more simply.
