This has been compiled by Joan Duckett “ROLL OF HONOUR” St James and St Basil’s Church originally from the 1930’s covered the district which is now the Parish of Holy Cross and also until the 1950’s the district of St Peter’s Church, Cowgate ADAMS In memory of Flying Officer John Edmund Adams – 197688 – 245 Squadron who died aged 21 on 20th November 1945 Son of John Buchanan and Annie Bertha Adams of Newcastle upon Tyne. Remembered with Honour Panel 266 Runnymede Memorial. On the 10th August 1945, 245 Squadron was disbanded, on the same day 504 Squadron was renumbered 245 Squadron, which flew Meteors as part of air defence of UK until March 1957, when it converted to Hunters. On 18th April 1963, it became 98 Squadron. ALLEN In memory of Pilot Officer John Frederick Woodward Allen, 424327 152 Squadron who died age 19 on 29th November 1940 No parents recorded by C.W.G.C. but his parents were Henry Woodward Allen of 21 kingsway, Newcastle upon Tyne. Remembered with Honour Weymouth Crematorium Memorial 152 Squadron October 1st 1939, was reformed at Arklington with Gladiators and became operational on 6th November. In January 1940, conversion to spitfires began and after a period of defensive patrols in NE the Squadron moved to Warmwell, to defend South England against attacks from the Luftwaffe forces, now based in France. Throughout the Battle of Britain, 152 defended this sector which included Portland Naval Base. J F W Allen was born 4.8.21. He was a pupil at Dame Allens School 17.9.31 - 25.3.37. He was educated at Holt School, Overstoke, Hants and Mount Prep. School, Monkseaton. Post offered (and accepted) as assistant with Monkhouse and Brown, Iron and Steel Merchants. His father Henry Woodward Allen was Assistant Manger - Commercial Business, also Flight Lieutenant RAVR. They lived at Farleigh, Ventnor Avenue, Benwell and later Adastia, 21 Kingsway, Newcastle upon Tyne ANDERSON In memory of Corporal James Anderson, 1127608 R.A.F.V.R.
