Programming in C++ Robert Gledhill Lecture 1 Course Objectives To give the knowledge and background to produce applications in the C++ language To build on earlier experience with object oriented development in Java To build confidence in software design and implementation To provide experience of IDE tools Adjustments This is the first time I am giving this C++ course I will be learning what you find easy and what you find difficult as the course goes on For this reason I may need to make some changes to the course structure as we go along Course Structure The course will be organised into four chapters 1: Basic program writing in C++ 2: Object Oriented Programming 3: Libraries and Templates 4: Advanced Programming Chapter 1 Introduction to the course C++ development tools History and context of C++ language Writing simple programs Maths Character and file I/O Strings Chapter 2 Structures, classes and objects The new and delete operators Arrays of objects Inheritance: public, protected and private Friend classes Pointers and references; const keyword Operator overloading Casting Chapter 3 Exceptions and exception handling Templates The C++ standard library Understanding and navigating APIs Namespaces The Standard Template Library (STL) Chapter 4 Sockets programming Graphical interface programming Assessment The course will be assessed as follows: 55% Final examination 40% Coursework 5% Attendance Exam The exam will be part multiple choice, part short sentence answers and part program writing Program parts will be written on paper I will be watching your homework and may give some short tests in lessons to assess how well you are doing for the exam Coursework You will be expected to complete a piece of coursework later in the term There will be two parts to it: A computer program A short essay This is SEPARATE FROM the ordinary homework you will be set This coursework will be 40% of your final mark Register I will begin taking a register of students next week If y
